Increased expectancy for intuitive interfaces is one of the drivers behind the development of Atmel's latest range of microprocessors.

With universal familiarity of smartphones and tablets, user expectations of interfaces and displays have been heightened irrespective of the application. Engineers designing products in sectors such as industrial, medical and handheld devices have to provide this functionality with the consequent requirements for low power, high performance and connectivity.

Atmel is now shipping its latest microprocessors, based on an ARM Cortex- A5 core, aimed to meet these requirements. The SAMA5D3 series is designed for embedded applications in the industrial space, including factory and building automation, smart grid, medical and handheld terminals, along with consumer applications such as smart watches, outdoor GPS, and DECT (digital enhanced cordless telecommunications) phones.

It uses a 65nm low power process technology to deliver up to 850DMIPS at 536MHz while offering 1328MB/s at 166MHz bus speed. The floating point unit also provides additional high precision processing power for image, audio and sensor data. The SAMA5D3 series delivers low power consumption under 200mW in active mode at maximum speed and below 0.5mW in low power mode when retaining context and offering fast wake up.

The series has a comprehensive peripheral set that includes a dual Ethernet port (one Gigabit), three high speed usb ports, dual CAN, TFT lcd controller with graphics accelerator for image composition, camera interface, SDIO/SD/MMC, UARTs, SPIs, TWIs, soft modem, 12bit a/d converter and 32bit timers.

Other features of the SAMA5D3 are anti piracy and counterfeiting security capabilities and an easy migration path for SAM9 users. There is also a set of design support tools that includes evaluation hardware, a softpack for non operating system users, and Linux, Android and QT Graphics SDK operating systems.
