I've been a life-long stutterer who has spent a lot of time thinking about the speech impediment. Until I met my wife, no one ever seemed to want to talk to me about stuttering, which I always felt was too bad. I've read through these forums and I can't help but feel that my situation is different than most. While I definitely feel pressure during "stress" situations, I don't feel that my stuttering is stress induced. In fact, I know before I say something if I'm going to stutter. Unfortunately, this has formed the way I have spoken and behaved all through life. For example, if I'm in a meeting and a question comes up for which I know the answer, but I can feel that I'm going to stutter, I opt to not say anything. Or if I'm in a group and a question is posed to me and I can tell I'm going to stutter on that word, I simply say something like "You know, I don't remember". Furthermore, when I read a passage silently -- I stutter in my mind! I feel like it's a physical brain defect and always has been. The few stutterers I've met seem to stutter purely on stress stimulus but I want to know if there are any others out there who seem to be like me.
